Exterior stucco can be applied over different substrates, making it easy to coordinate with other exterior finishes. Although there are individual CCMC requirements and manufacturers’ specifications with different substrates, the most common process follows these general steps:
Step 1. Treat joints of existing substrates & install required membranes
Step 2. Apply secondary barrier (such as moisture, vapour & air barriers)
Step 3. Apply EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) and prepare to receive basecoat
Step 4. Apply basecoat with embedded mesh
Step 5. Apply finish coat
The key is having a thorough understanding of the different manufacturers, their individual materials and specifications, and ensuring the applicators follow those precise instructions. And in some instances, only certified applicators can quote on certain projects.
